A golf handicap is a numerical measure of a golfer's playing ability. It allows players of different skill levels to compete fairly against each other. The lower your handicap, the better you are.
Think of it as your scoring potential. A 15-handicap golfer is expected to shoot about 15 strokes over par on an average course. A scratch golfer (0 handicap) is expected to shoot par.
Introduced in 2020, the World Handicap System (WHS) unified six different handicap systems worldwide. Your Handicap Index is calculated from the best 8 of your last 20 scores.
The formula: (Score - Course Rating) × (113 / Slope Rating) = Score Differential. Your Handicap Index = average of best 8 differentials × 0.96 (96% factor to encourage improvement).
Course Rating indicates the expected score for a scratch golfer. A course with a 72.3 rating is slightly harder than par 72.
Slope Rating measures difficulty for bogey golfers relative to scratch golfers. Range is 55-155, with 113 being average. Higher slope = harder for higher-handicap players.
| Course | Rating | Slope | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Easy municipal | 68.5 | 110 | Below average |
| Average course | 71.0 | 125 | Average |
| Championship | 74.5 | 145 | Very difficult |
| Handicap | Level | Typical Score (par 72) | % of Golfers |
|---|---|---|---|
| +2 to 0 | Scratch/Plus | 70-72 | ~1% |
| 1-9 | Single digit (very good) | 73-81 | ~20% |
